Job Description

The primary responsibility for the Operational Accounting Lead is managing a team of Operational Accountants during the 2021 fire season to deliver “clean data” work products for corporate accounting. This position requires the individual to work closely with several departments to ensure procedures are being followed as they should for processes to flow efficiently.

The Operational Accounting Lead supervises the team of Operational Accountants to QA/QC services performed and approves engine shift tickets to provide complete and accurate data for sub-contractors, employees, and clients. The Operational Accounting Lead must be detail-oriented to organize and track the engine shift tickets to ensure that all information is accurate and ready to be processed by corporate accounting.

This individual coordinates and organizes contact with field employees when engine shift tickets are not submitted or erroneous, or to address questions to ensure approval of the time to sub-contractors and clients occurs in an appropriate time frame. This individual is responsible for the final review and approval of expenses and time for the engine and individuals on the assignment, dictated by the engine shift ticket.

The Operational Accounting Lead works individually and with the team to support the Accounting Department in the accuracy and efficiency of this vital process of field operations. This individual works closely with the Data Processing Manager and their team on workflow, priorities, and ensuring correct information is being received from the field for corporate accounting to process.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage Operational Accountants in the shift ticket QA/QC and approval processes. The team may be 5 or more accountants.
  • Manage workflows and human resource schedules to maximize efficiency and avoid time waste.
  • Work with Corporate Accounting on process solutions as necessary
  • Quality Assurance and Quality Control field shift tickets
  • Review and approve shift tickets as final accounting entries.
  • Various jobs as assigned by the Fire Admin Manager.
  • Cross-train in other WDS departments as appropriate and identify areas for team members to cross-train.

C. Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of an undergraduate program or equivalent experience (B.A. or B.S.)
  • Proven leadership experience.
  • Proven software competency i.e., MS Office Suite, Google Earth.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Accounting Degree or advanced Degree
  • Intermediate skill with Excel or other modern data tools

  • Ability to manage a team of people efficiently; this includes managing their schedules, capacity, workload, and strategically planning for future months.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Show strength in analytics (understanding and manipulating data) and critical thinking.
  • Ability to work effectively in a workplace where change can happen rapidly.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize time between projects.
  • Self-motivated to begin and continue tasks without continual supervision. An ideal candidate will have a curiosity to learn and seek a greater understanding of any endeavor they undertake.
  • Desire to lead a team and work across departments as one team.
  • Desire to explore multiple avenues until a resolution is reached. (Needed when data discrepancies are present, when determining data queries, and when exploring process/software development solutions.)

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15-lbs.
