Job Description:

The Custom Engineering Team at Montana Instruments is hiring a Mechanical Engineer Level II. The Custom Engineering Team develops new products to meet the requirements of specific customers and applications. 

The Mechanical Engineer Level II is responsible for all aspects of mechanical engineering design, analysis, prototyping, test, and documentation of mechanical components and assemblies for Montana Instruments technology and products.  This position supports new product introductions as well as sustaining engineering efforts; striving to release designs on schedule and under budget while meeting internal and external customers’ expectations and specifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Design of machined parts, complex sheet metal parts and assemblies, injection molded and 3D printed parts.
  • Work with existing conceptual designs and testbeds to design for prototyping, manufacturing, and production ready parts and assemblies.
  • Design of complex parts and assemblies within a 3D CAD environment.
  • Interface with vendors about part specification and manufacturing details.
  • Effectively communicate with fabricators to schedule prototype Fabrication and with Purchasing for ordering of parts.
  • Create documentation necessary to transition a product from development to production. (Assembly drawings, Part Numbers and accurate Bills of Materials, CAD files, etc.)
  • Develop and maintain documentation for core engineering processes and procedures
  • Support released products and parts in a timely manner to avoid distraction from development work.
  • Works across company departments to communicate needs, clear project roadblocks, accomplish tasks, and align work with company priorities
  • Manage own time as well as lead projects when required.

  • Participate in technical design reviews

Key Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 3-5 years relevant work experience

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of mechanical engineering basic knowledge (strength of materials, heat transfer, statics and dynamics) and the ability to intuitively and effectively utilize them.
  • Proficient with CAD software, including FEA and PDM (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to manage time when working on multiple tasks and/or projects.
  • Fundamental understanding of scientific principles.
  • Understanding of alternative and normal manufacturing processes including additive manufacturing of all types.
  • Knowledge of vacuum systems including O-ring specifications and typical plumbing fittings
  • Knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics
  • Experience with vibrations design and analysis
  • Knowledge of low temperature material properties, practices, adhesives, etc.
  • CNC/CAM Machining Experience with DFM knowledge and experience
  • Familiar with Python or other programming language as a computational tool
  • Self-starter, able to work in a fast-paced environment with accuracy/efficiency.
  • Familiarity with design for CE compliance
  • Familiarity with developing and introducing new products to market
  • Familiarity with product life cycle management process
