SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION

The EIM Operator performs varying functions in the real time operation group. This position performs the EIM Operational duties within Grid Operations. This will be mainly focused on providing direction and guidance in monitoring and operating 24x7 electrical system functions associated with EIM Real-time Management which may have impacts to NorthWestern Energy's Balancing Authority and Transmission System and the other various technical tasks required.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Adheres to FERC Standards of Conduct, and complies with WECC Operating Criteria, NERC Reliability Standards, DOT, and other Regulatory Operating Policies, Procedures, and guidelines
  • Provides direction, training, establishes priorities, and guidance in monitoring and operating electrical systems to lower classification level EIM Operators
  • Maintains NERC Certification through the NERC continuing education process

EIM Responsibilities:

  • Review and modify Generation schedules to pass binding EIM Sufficiency Tests.
  • Review and Respond to CAISO EIM Sufficiency Test Failures (Capacity, Balance, Flex Ramp) for the Balancing Authority Area (BAA).
  • A Point of Contact for CAISO Generation Outages/Availability.
  • Monitor CAISO Customer Market Results Interface.
  • Monitories Transfer limits for each Intertie to another EIM participant, including administration through BAAOP.
  • Enter NorthWestern Energy into contingency events for EIM and coordinate requests for Reserve Sharing to respond to NWE Contingency Events or requests from Reserve Sharing partners.
  • Ensure Designation of Contingency Reserves for EIM.
  • Review/Respond to Sufficiency Test Failures (Congestion) in coordination with the Transmission System Operator and the Energy Supply Scheduler.
  • Monitoring the EIM solution and blocking the implementation of the solution as needed to maintain reliability.
  • Monitoring and Coordinating Manual Generation Starts, Stops and Dispatches to ensure reliable Generation operations within the BAA are effectively communicated to the EIM, including deployment of reserves during contingency events.
  • Manage the EIM load conformance process as needed to ensure reliable and efficient generation operations, especially during contingency events and when responding to Reserve Sharing requests.
  • Monitor the EIM solution in Real-Time and evaluate results for Market Infeasibilities, generation data errors, communication errors and other Real-Time issues which impact generation operations and EIM solution quality.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • An AA degree in Power System Operations from an accredited college or university Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Electrical knowledge/experience preferred
  • Must possess strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while keeping supervision apprised of project status
  • Must be organized and have the ability to work well with a wide variety of job functions
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Experience with Plant Information (PI) software desired
  • A valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record
  • Must be willing to work a 12 hour rotating schedule
