SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of Safety oversees the safety, health, and public safety efforts of all Company operations. This position directs the safety function within the Company, which includes the supervision of all professional and administrative positions assigned to the Safety organization. The position identifies and develops strategies to mitigate significant business risks, enhance regulatory compliance, identify process gaps and recommend associated improvements. Provides oversight and consultation to all departments in support of those activities that will achieve an injury/illness free workplace in full compliance with regulations. With minimal supervision, this position manages the development, implementation, and documentation of all required elements of a successful safety and health program. The Director is responsible for working with all levels of leadership to develop a continuous improvement culture in respect to safety performance. The position participates in the development of Company and department safety goals and objectives and the development of business plans.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Leads special projects as required utilizing effective change and project management techniques
  • Ensure compliance with policies, controls, and applicable state and federal rules and regulations
  • Manages talent effectively utilizing best practices to achieve effective business results
  • Coordinate and/or direct development of activities to ensure that project needs and objectives are met
  • Measures, monitors, and reports status of goals and project achievements
  • Communicates effectively with stakeholders including employees to achieve positive business outcomes
  • Maintains professional knowledge and takes steps to stay abreast of market changes and industry developments
  • Builds company image by collaborating with customers, government, community organizations, and employees
  • Identifies and supports the development of a Company culture that encourages the internalization of safety and produces positive employee safety attitudes
  • Provides management throughout the Company with the proper tools and guidance to enable them to effectively manage safety efforts within their respective organizations
  • Identifies, researches, and develops "best practices" related to safety program components
  • Identifies and implements various proactive safety measures to reduce and prevent safety incidents; includes the systemic process to collect data and analyze causal factors
  • Represents the Company in safety issues with regulatory agencies such as OSHA and DOT, and in any legal proceedings involving employee or public safety events
  • Develops creative solutions to safety challenges; remain current on safety issues and identify innovative approaches to improve existing programs
  • Reports to various levels of leadership up to and including the Board of Directors, on the progress of safety initiatives and safety metrics; prepares various reports, documents, and correspondence regarding safety matters within the Company
  • Maintains competence and understanding of industry and specialty best practices and implements those approaches in the workplace, if appropriate
  • Ensures coordination of safety training to ensure regulatory compliance as well as efficiency of delivery
  • Ensures safety staff development and competence
  • Develops and revises as necessary written safety policies and procedures in compliance with applicable regulations; implements a safety auditing system to ensure compliance with those regulations
  • Has the ability to travel up to 50% of the time

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
  • Bachelor's Degree in safety or related field required
  • Strong problem solving and business acumen skills
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills; ability to supervise and motivate employees
  • Strong computer skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong organizational skills
  • Progressive experience in the health and safety field, with strong knowledge of how to build an effective safety culture along with a solid safety compliance program
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local safety requirements
  • Knowledge of electric and natural gas utility operations preferred
  • Ability to work effectively with and influence employees who are not direct reports at all levels of the organization
  • Willingness to dedicate extra hours to meet deadlines, workloads, and maintain skills and knowledge to serve as the safety leader for the organization
  • Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Professional Engineer designation is preferred
  • Valid State Driver's License and satisfactory driving record is required
