SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION

The Automation Engineer will primarily be responsible to develop and implement automation and technology solutions for the company's electric distribution system. This includes all aspects of the life cycle of these type of projects from inception, business case justification, design, implementation, project close out, and follow through. Other job duties include responsibility to analyze electric system needs, control needs, and protection needs, and develop solutions.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensure all actions are consistent with NorthWestern Energy's values, mission, and strategic business objectives
  • Apply technology (e.g. Intelligent Electronic Devices, Distributed Energy Resources, Communication, Software, Systems, etc.) to the electric distribution system for the purpose of improving safety, reliability, efficiency, etc.
  • Design, specify, and integrate field equipment with system software and services
  • Provide training and support as new products and systems are implemented
  • Troubleshoot systems, analyze data, and evaluate results of applied technologies and programs
  • Develop economic and business case justifications to advance technology projects in the distribution area
  • Develop automation and protective device coordination schemes for the electric system
  • Respond to internal/external inquiries related to equipment and systems
  • Provide technical support for operations in areas related to technology initiatives
  • Research new technology and products for improving safety, efficiency, and reliability of the electric system, providing detailed reports and recommendations for equipment and systems
  • Monitor progress and performance of vendors that are providing products and services
  • Travel to jobsites, off-site meetings, and trainings (up to 15% travel per year) including overnight stays when necessary

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
  • Must have a B.S. degree in Engineering
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer's License is preferred
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of load flow and protective relaying software (CYME) preferred
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
