The Energy Supply Analyst performs various functions associated with planning to ensure NorthWestern Energy has adequate resources to meet its electricity and natural gas retail load serving obligations. Regular duties will include conducting technical research and analysis, producing data graphics and summary reports, and other tasks associated with long-term supply planning, regulatory filings and proceedings, resource selection and acquisition, electricity resource portfolio management, and electricity supply contracts. Analysis of current and future electricity supply resources, retail load, and the electric and gas resource portfolios are central to the analyst position.

  • Must have or develop a working knowledge of NorthWestern Energy supply operations and electricity generation resources
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators
  • Author work products in support of regulatory filings, and progressively develop toward an ability to serve as an expert witness in regulatory proceedings
  • Ability to plan work, anticipate challenges, and develop solutions to meet schedules
  • Must be flexible and adaptable to changing of assignments and priorities of the Energy Supply Group
  • Incorporate operational, legal, regulatory, and environmental factors in completion of assignments

Marginal Work Functions

  • Travel to meetings and conferences (Up to 10% travel per year)


  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics or Physics, Engineering or related field of study required
    • Previous experience as an analyst preferred, and
    • Energy industry experience and/or graduate degree in a related field preferred
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills required
  • Must be able to demonstrate excellent written and oral communications skills, ability to work in a team environment, problem-solving skills, and a good safety record
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the use of Microsoft® products including Excel and Word
