Supports the design, deployment, and operations of a large-scale global Oracle cloud computing environment (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - OCI). Primarily focused on development and support of network fabric and systems through a combination of a deep level understanding of networking at the protocol level coupled with programming skills to support the intensive automation required to operate a production environment.  As OCI is a cloud-based network with a global footprint, this support will include hundreds of thousands of network devices supporting millions of servers, connected over a mix of dedicated backbone infrastructure and the Internet. 

Participate in Network lifecycle management through network build and/or upgrade projects.  Collaborate with program/project managers to develop milestones and deliverables.  Will primarily use existing procedures and tools to develop and safely execute network change.  However, may have to develop new procedures from time to time.  Serve as technical lead for team projects.  Contributes to the development of roadmap issues.  Leads development of new runbooks and method of procedures.  Mentors junior engineers. Participates in network solution and architecture design process.  Responsibility for developing standalone features.  Participate in operational rotations as either primary or secondary.  Provide break-fix support for events. Serve as escalation point for event remediation.  Lead post-event root cause analysis.  Coordinate with networking automation services for the development and integration of support tooling.  Frequently develops scripts to automate routine tasks for team and business unit.  Serves as SME on software development projects for network automation.  Supports network vendor software bug fixes.  Collaborate with network vendor technical account team and internal Quality Assurance team to drive bug resolution and assist in the qualification of new firmware and/or operating systems.                                                                

Bachelors degree in Computer Science preferred and at least 5 years of related experience.  Experience working in a large ISP or cloud provider environment.   Exposure to commodity Ethernet hardware (Broadcom/Mellanox), protocol experience with BGP/OSPF/IS-IS, TCP, IPv4, IPv6, DNS, DHCP, MPLS.  Experience with networking protocols such as TCP/IP, VPN, DNS, DHCP, and SSL.  Experience with Internet peering and inter-domain networking.  Experience with scripting or automation and datacenter design – Python preferred, but must demonstrate knowledge in a scripting or compiled language.  Experience with high level software design/development.  Experience with automation systems, framework design/use and deployment.  Experience with network modeling and programing – YANG, OpenConfig, NETCONF.  Knowledge of network security design, system performance characterization and testing.  Knowledge of data flow and telemetry design, deployment and operation.  Excellent judgment in influence for product roadmap direction, features, and priorities.  Ability to work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. and demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Capable of working under limited supervision.   Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills. 

Range and benefit information provided in this posting are Colorado-specific.

Colorado Pay Range: from $87,000 to $167,000 per annum eligible for bonus and equity.

The selected candidate will be joining the Optical Network Engineering team which is responsible for building and scaling Oracle’s DWDM Transport Network. The team is focused on engineering and enabling the deployment of DWDM transport systems. The successful candidate will have a direct impact on our top priority of delivering optical capacity and engineering solutions to support Oracle’s cloud infrastructure to provide metro DWDM optical transport solutions in support of the needs of the network. To continue to drive down costs for equipment and services for DWDM. To train other teams to deploy and operate optical systems. To provide operations support to ensure availability and uptime of the DWDM network. To develop standards for engineering, deployment, and operations. To write code enabling the acceleration of our engineering cycles.

The optical network engineer will have excellent written and verbal communication and collaboration habits that will enable them to operate with a high level of agility and autonomy.


The Roles & Responsibilities of this job will include:

  • Plan and implement network changes in a high availability environment.
  • Develop engineering skills inside of Optical Engineering and in peer groups.
  • Work with deployment teams and data center operations providing support during new capacity additions and changes on the optical network.
  • Review OTDR/CD/PMD test reports for inside plant and outside plant fiber acceptance.
  • Own optical network infrastructure documentation, responsible for updating and maintaining network drawings and plans for both operational purposes and new builds.
  • Maintain optical network designs for metro, regional and long-haul DWDM systems.
  • Work with the engineering team to define optical standards and best practices for deployment.
  • Maximizing network performance by troubleshooting network problems and outages, scheduling upgrades, and collaborating with network architects on network optimization.
  • Participate in FOA and field trials of new platforms and technologies.
  • Work with the network qualification team to test and incorporate net platforms into the network.
  • Contribute code with development teams for foundations of automation tools with a perspective of transport systems and operational best practices.

 

Product & Technology

  • Excellent knowledge of optical testing and troubleshooting including experience with test equipment such as OTDR, OSA, BERT, and optical power meters.
  • Understanding of high order modulation, flex grid technology, and CDC systems.
  • Good understanding of the component level operation of optical devices such as modulators, couplers, AWGs, DCMs
  • Ability to troubleshoot a variety of physical layer problems involving pluggable optics and overall interoperation of different layer 1 technologies.
  • Working knowledge of major DWDM Transport vendors both hardware and software.
  • Experience with physical fiber plant design and deployment both inside the plant and outside plant standards and methods.
  • Experience at scale in the deployment of data center interconnect metro DWDM solutions
  • Strong knowledge of OTN, MPLS, SNMP, TL1, and XML.
  • Multi-vendor networking hardware experience including Cisco, Juniper, Infinera, Ciena, Adva
  • Hands-on Experience with deploying networks including the configuration of network devices, DWDM, Routers, and switches
  • Knowledge of scripting

Education Qualifications & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering / Engineering Physics or equivalent
  • 5-9 years of proven experience in building, managing networks.
  • Knowledge of DWDM networks and optical transport technologies
  • Strong Networking skills including IP routing and routing protocols, L2 switching, 
  • Exceptional troubleshooting, event correlation, and trending skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of Python or other scripting languages
  • Cisco Certified DevNet Professional w/ Implementing Automation for Cisco Data Center Solutions (DCAUI) preferred
  • Extreme Programming (XP) or similar Scrum + Test-Driven Development (TDD) equivalent preferred
  • CCNP/JNCP or equivalent experience 
  • RHCS in Ansible Automation or equivalent experience 
  • Python proficiency 
  • Experience testing python with Jenkins
  • Certified Scrum Master or Experience working within Lean / Agile frameworks
