Brief Position Overview
This position requires precision work and technical skills. This position supports the configuration, installation, testing, validation, support, maintenance, and documentation of network and telecommunications equipment, communications cabling, and related components and infrastructure including UPS, PDU, racks and cabinets, in data centers and at field sites on and off the MSU Bozeman campus according to standard procedures in use and industry best practices.

This position responds to issues, and troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs/fixes network and telecommunications hardware, software, services, and related infrastructure, including communications cabling, to address problems. This position’s work schedule may require non-standard working hours including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

This position supports the MSU community, including end users, and follows standard incident management, problem management, change management, and request fulfillment processes in accordance with procedures in place and in coordination with related teams. Providing documentation, training, and assisting other support personal with problems related to the usage of network and telecommunications services and related infrastructure is standard.

General Statement
The full time Network Analyst [EA1] is an integral member of the Network Services Team participating in the support and operation of Montana State University’s network and telecommunications services. The position requires a basic understanding of networking, telecommunications, and communications cabling concepts. The position requires precision work, the ability to follow instructions, customer service, troubleshooting, and technical support skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under general to direct supervision, assist team with basic and routine tasks:

    • Supports the installation, configuration, testing, and validation of network and telecommunications equipment, components, systems, and related infrastructure including UPS, PDU, racks, cabinets, and communications cabling using standard tools, meters, testing devices, software applications, and techniques according to plans, drawings, schematics, blueprints, documents, written and/or verbal instructions, and industry best practices. Document installations and test results according to standard procedures and practices in use.
    • Respond to network and/or telecommunications system failures.
    • Troubleshoot, identify, correct and/or repair basic and fundamental network, telecommunications, and/or communications cabling problems, including software, and/or replacing defective equipment and/or components.
    • Supports the maintenance of network and telecommunications, UPS and PDU equipment, including new software releases, patches, and upgrades. Perform maintenance activities on communications cabling.
    • Create and/or update documents and records including cable records, usage reports, equipment life-cycle records, equipment and tool inventories, equipment operation and support documents, and site condition and inventory reports.
    • Maintain and submit records of time and materials required to complete projects and tasks.
    • Support the configuration of monitoring systems to alert on abnormal configuration or operation; maintain monitoring functionality as changes occur.
    • Participate in performance-related goal setting and achievement to meet personal and organizational goals and objectives.
    • Organize, prioritize, and communicate on-going work to meet multiple task and project timelines.
    • Attend and participate in trainings and other professional development activity.
    • Participate in projects, complete tasks, and perform job-related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Basic understanding of networking, telecommunications, and communications cabling concepts.
  2. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  3. Demonstrated ability to handle competing demands and maintain high levels of customer service and response.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Demonstrated experience with communications cabling.
  2. Demonstrated experience with Aruba wireless controllers and wireless access points.
  3. Demonstrated experience with Cisco switches, routers, and firewalls.
  4. Demonstrated experience Cisco Unified Communication deployments.
  5. Relevant knowledge of best practices to manage and secure networks with an emphasis on higher education.
