About this position:

The DOC Engineer will perform various engineering functions to support controlling and operating the electric distribution system, and Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Technology for the company's South Dakota and Montana SCADA Control Center. The DOC Engineer will work closely with other groups within the company including leaders of Operations, Contact Center, Grid Operations, Construction, Planning, and Safety

About this job:

  • Incorporate technology (e.g. Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED), Communication, Software, etc.) that is applied to the electric distribution system into the SCADA control system
  • Design, specify, and configure the SCADA system software and services
  • Provide training and support as new products and systems are implemented
  • Troubleshoot systems, analyze data, and evaluate results of applied technologies and programs
  • This includes distribution switching plans, feeder loading, line reroutes, feeder ties and control process evaluations.
  • Document, report, and make recommendations to develop long-term support for the increased use of technology in the distribution area
  • Lead coordination for SD & MT SCADA Control requests
  • Investigate and keep the company current on new trends or systems in automation
  • Respond to internal/external inquiries related to equipment and systems
  • Respond to operating needs by performing field investigations and engineering evaluations
  • Evaluate, specify, integrate, and monitor the performance of vendor products and services
  • Perform computer related functions such as engineering analysis, drawing, spreadsheets, database compilations, and software configuration programming
  • Develop and write technical processes and procedures for distribution control systems
  • Compile and write technical reports
  • Verifying and reporting on electrical outages and indices
  • Create quarterly operations report for regulatory compliance
  • Coordinate and request planned transmission clearances, switching, hot line holds and other related requests
  • Ensure that work is performed in compliance with all federal, state and local regulations as well as Policies and Procedures established by NorthWestern Energy
  • Travel up to 40% as the work requires
  • Access historical operation data and provide reports for planning purposes
  • Participate in an on-call rotation

  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer's License is preferred
  • Good organizational and technical skills required

  • Knowledge and experience of working with data bases preferred
  • General understanding of electric utility systems preferred
  • General understanding of data communications and computer networking preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of the National Electric Safety Code and National Electric Code is preferred
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Software: Access, Excel, PPT, etc.
  • Technical and professional writing skills
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
