Job Description

Advance Your Machining Career in Cryogenics & Quantum Technology

At Four Nine Design, we create advanced cryogenic systems that support the next generation of quantum computing
and scientific discovery. Our tight-knit, fast-moving team relies on machinists to translate engineering designs into
precision parts that keep work moving from concept to reality. In this role, you’ll operate and own our in-house
machining capabilities, working closely with engineers and production to support prototyping, production builds, and
continuous improvement of our manufacturing processes. You’ll gain hands-on experience machining precision
hardware, influencing design-for-manufacturability decisions, and helping shape how complex systems are built from
concept to finished assembly. If you take pride in precision work, enjoy problem-solving alongside engineers, and are
excited to contribute directly to groundbreaking technology, this is a unique opportunity to grow within a highly technical and rapidly evolving industry.

Position: Machinist

Position Type: Full Time, On-Site

Location: Billings, MT

What You’ll Do

Build Precision Parts to Support Engineering & Production

  • Safely operate a 3-axis CNC mill to produce prototype and production parts, including modifications and
repairs, across a range of materials such as aluminum, copper, stainless steels, brass, plastics, and
    occasionally titanium.
  • Ensure accurate, repeatable results through proper setup, tooling, and material handling to support prototype
    and production readiness.
  • Own day-to-day machine shop operations, maintaining a clean, organized workspace and properly managing
tools, equipment, and stock, with opportunity to grow into overseeing in-house manufacturing.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturability principles and collaborate closely with engineering to improve efficiency
    and support production needs.

Improve Processes & Deliver High-Quality Results

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and increased efficiency.
  • Apply GD&T knowledge to measure machined features and ensure parts meet specifications.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings with a high level of accuracy.
  • Uphold departmental safety requirements and quality standards.

Shape Products from Design to Finished Parts

  • Contribute to how parts move from design to finished product through close collaboration with engineering.
  • Influence machining strategies and workflows that improve delivery speed and reliability.
  • Support continuous improvement in how in-house manufacturing operates and scales.

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience operating a CNC mill and running CAM operations, with the ability to work
    independently.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, engineering drawings, and design for manufacturability.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, writing, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Welding experience with aluminum, copper, and steel, and experience machining titanium, preferred.
  • Ability to stand regularly and lift 25–75 lbs. as needed.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • Fast Growth & Real Responsibility - You won’t be stuck watching from the sidelines, you’ll take ownership of
projects early and see your work directly impact production.
  • Cutting-Edge Technology - Work with cryogenic systems, high-vacuum technologies, superconducting
hardware, and tools used in quantum research labs around the world.
  • Mentorship & Skill Development - Learn directly from experienced engineers in a collaborative, supportive
    environment where curiosity is encouraged.
  • Competitive Benefits - Health benefits, retirement plan, PTO, company-sponsored events, and a fun, tight-
knit culture that values hard work and continuous improvement.

Core Values

  • Hard Work & Focus: Bring intensity and attention to everything you do.
  • Humility: Stay open to learning and improvement.
  • Integrity: Do what’s right — always.
  • Innovation: Think creatively and challenge old assumptions.
  • Productivity: Deliver high-impact results efficiently.

If you are a motivated individual with a passion for accuracy, excellent communication skills, and are eager to
contribute to the success of our projects, we encourage you to apply for this position at Four Nine Design.
